notes

The Collection

Our first collection of washable wool rugs involved many rounds of revision to ensure these pieces were beautiful and functional. Their modified construction makes the rugs quite supple, so they're more easily squashed into a washing machine; without compromising on thickness, softness, and fluffiness. The graphic simplicity of the linework sings across their soft fields, allowing the high-low effect of the pile to shine through.

The Design

Named for esteemed linocut artists, these rugs feature a thick cut-pile design which reads as tone-on-tone. Taylor is engraved in a loose, gestural, oversized plaid. Look closely at its grid and you'll notice that the horizontal lines are ever-so-slightly darker than their vertical counterparts, a subtle, enriching detail.

The Material

Washable wool rugs with a soft, satisfying footfall and pleasing weight, Lino is woven of a combination of New Zealand and Indian wools to achieve just the right texture and durability. New Zealand wool is a premium wool beloved for its softness and long fibers. The fiber's natural lanolin makes it soft and shiny, protecting it from shedding and dirt. It also decomposes quickly, without risk of microfibers.

The Maker

We partnered with a small, family-run weaving house. They're Craftmark-certified, which means they meet stringent national standards for socially responsible handmade products. Many of their weavers have been with them for as long as 30 years. To visit their factory is to be steeped in its personal history, from the walls of photographs honoring their lineage, to the majestic, hundred-year-old timber looms they still use today.

The Designer

Our in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they work with the supplier on an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.

About Custom Rugs

It takes approximately 8-9 weeks to produce and ship a custom piece, where it then arrives at our warehouse for a final inspection.

Because our custom rugs are woven by hand, there will be natural variations in color, and final sizes can vary by up to 2' in length and width.

Rug Care
  • Clean regularly with a non-rotary, low powered vacuum without a beater brush.
  • Wash your rug separately with mild detergent on a gentle cycle at 86 degrees fahrenheit. Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Tumble dry low; remove promptly.
  • The first few times you wash your rug, there will be some fluff left in the washing machine. Don't be alarmed; this will lessen and ultimately stop. The yarn continues to open after washing, making the rug fluffier with time.
  • For sizes 6'x9' and 8'x10', we recommend using a 60-lb washing machine (the large kind you find at a laundromat) rather than a home washing machine, which is usually 20-25 lbs.
  • For sizes 9'x12' and above, spot cleaning is best
  • While wool is generally very stain-resistant, thanks to its natural lanolin, dog accidents are tricky. It's difficult to remove dog urine from wool as it basically burns the fiber. In the case of dog urine, all stains should be attended to as quickly as possible to minimize possible scarring. When removing a stain, it's important to dab the affected area rather than rub or scrub it. In case of spills, use a paper towel or cloth to blot the liquid. Add some clean water sparingly to the spot to dilute the stain (or wet a paper towel or cloth) and blot. If the stain is persistent, try using a mild detergent. Repeat this process until the stain is removed.
